About us

CLUB HISTORY

The Essex Gliding Club as it exists today was formed in 1960 but its roots can be traced all the way back to 1930. In 1960 the EGC operated with one winch and a single glider with gliding starting at North Weald Airfield.

OUR AIRFIELD

We operate from Ridgewell Airfield from April until October.

The Essex Gliding Club (EGC) has been running for over 75 years and to this day is still run entirely by its members. There are no paid staff at EGC: the committee, instructors, tug pilots, winch drivers, administration and other EGC members all contribute to the club so that everyone can enjoy the pleasure of gliding.

COMMITTEE

Essex Gliding Club is run entirely by its members. Although members help out with running the club we also have a committee of 9 EGC members who organise the smooth operation of EGC and work on future developments and projects. Needless to say all committee members are keen glider pilots!

AIRFIELD HISTORY

Ridgewell Airfield has a fascinating history being a bomber base during the second World War.
